Hamill, whose trademark skating move, the “Hamill camel,” along with her signature bob haircut which went viral during the 1976 Olympics, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Over the years she has been involved with many organizations, including the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the International Special Olympics and the American Cancer Society, advocating education for women. Hamill’s 2007 memoir, “A Skating Life: My Story,” has inspired many to pursue their dream.
